"Choices: Make the Right One"

By Jodee S., Fifth Grade, Madison Elementary, Cedar Rapids, Iowa

"Let's go shopping. I want a CD for my CD player," Colton said grabbing his backpack.

"OK," said Rocky.

Colton and Rocky are the best of friends. They're a lot alike inside, but totally different on the outside. For an example, Colton is an African alligator and Rocky is a Brown Bear from Colorado. They don't care if they look different, they like each other very much until pigs can fly.

"Look at this one!" yelled Colton when they got to Musicland.

Rocky walked over to Colton. He took the CD from him and read the

title. It said: Out West By Susan Willford

Rocky was shocked.

"Country?" he asked looking at Colton.

"Yeah," Colton answered.

"I thought you liked nature music," Rocky said.

"Come on, I'm buying it," Colton said walking over to the cash register.

"Hello," said the lady at the cash register.

"Hi," replied Colton getting some money out of his backpack.

Rocky looked around the big store. He saw some familiar people. He saw Renae the rhino, Hoby the hippo and Lennete the lion. Lennete was doing something strange. She looked around her, turning her head left and right. Then she grabbed a CD and hid it in her jacket as fast as lighting! Then she headed for the exit door holding her jacket tightly.

"Thank you," said the lady at the cash register.

"Come on let's go home," Colton said anxiously. "I want to try out my new CD."

Rocky quickly refused to go and whispered what he saw in Colton's ear.

Colton's eyes widened and ran for the exit door. Rocky was right behind him.

They spotted Lennete by her car.

"Lennete!" they yelled running towards her.

"What?" she asked when they got there.

"What do you mean what!?" screamed Rocky.

He screamed so loud that the surrounding people looked at him strangely.

Rocky just smiled in embarrassment, rolled his eyes, than gently grabbed Lennete by the arm and pulled her into the alley that they were standing by so nobody could see them. Colton followed them because he thought he was apart of the situation too.

"What ís all this about?" asked Lennete holding her jacket even tighter.

"It's about you and the CD that you took!" yelled Rocky.

"Calm down!" commanded Colton. "We can just try to explain this to her."

"Explain what?" asked Lennete.

"OK now listen carefully. I saw you take a CD from Musicland today. Confess that you did," said Rocky in a sweeter voice.

Lennete decided to tell her friends the truth. She reached in her coat and pulled out the CD.

"I confess."

"OK, good. Now what should we do about this nonsense?" Colton asked her.

"Get punished," she mumbled.

"Let's go tell the storekeeper." Rocky suggested walking towards the entrance of Musicland while the other two followed behind. They went inside and went to the same lady at the cash register.

"Uh, hi," said Rocky getting her attention.

"Hello," she said.

"Hi," Rocky said again. "We have a friend here that stole a CD from here today."

"Oh," she replied looking sad like this stuff has happened a lot before.

Colton gave Lennete a little push forward. Lennete gave the CD to the lady and said, "I'm sorry."

"Honey, I'm going to call the police and tell them to come see what we should do for a punishment," she said picking up the phone and dialing a number.

In a few minutes a police officer pulled up with his cop car in front of the store. He came in the front door and Rocky went to greet him.

"Hi Lennete," said the officer said in a deep voice. "Come with me."

All three of them followed him into the store's lounge.

"I didn't want any of the customers bothering us," the officer explained. "Here are some simple questions."

He handed a piece of paper to Lennete with at least 10 questions.

She filled it out and gave it back to him. He glanced at it and then said, "Since you admitted that you stole the CD and gave it back immediately, I'm deciding to give you a fine and if you pay $100.00 and sweep this floor every night for a month, you don't have to go to jail."

Lennete sighed, "OK. I'll do it."

The officer, Rocky, and Colton all smiled.

One day later she paid $100.00 to the police officer and swept the whole floor of Musicland. She continued sweeping for a month just like she promised to do.

She was so happy after a month when she finished her work. On that night Rocky, Colton, and Lennete went to Screamers for ice cream.

Lennete decided that she won't do anything to upset anybody as much ever again.

Now that's what I call a good choice!
